Dishman's Pharmacy compounding pharmacists and our trained staff of
pharmacy technicians, along with the prescribing physician, fit the
medication to the patient rather than trying to fit the patient to the
medication.
The compounding pharmacist customizes the dose, flavor, color and
packaging of a medication that is not commercially available. There are
several reasons why Dishman's Pharmacy compounds prescription medications;
yet, the most important one is patient non-compliance. Many patients are
allergic to preservatives or dyes, or are sensitive to standard drug
strengths.
With a physician's consent, our compounding pharmacists can change the
strength of medication or alter its form to make it easier for the patient
to ingest, or add flavor to it to make it more palatable. The compounding
pharmacist also can prepare the medication using several unique delivery
systems, such as a sub-lingual troche, a lollipop, or a trans-dermal gel.
Or, for those patients who are having a difficult time swallowing a
capsule, the compounding pharmacist can make a suspension instead.
Dishman's Pharmacy pharmacists focus on meeting special needs. This may
involve compounding an eye drop in a sterile compounding lab, an injection
for impotency, preparing medications for veterinarians or dentists,
providing natural alternatives in hormone replacement therapy, customizing
a topical anti-inflammatory or analgesic preparation for chronic pain
patients, or assisting physicians in treating hospice patients.
The ultimate goal in preparing any of these customized medications is
to help the physician and patient achieve a more positive therapeutic
outcome.
